LIHS holds approximately 200 hours of oral histories on cassette tapes! (Remember those?) Violet Vogt Norman, born on Lopez in 1901 and pictured above, is one of these wonderful interviews. They range in date from the late 1950s through the 2000s, and they need to be digitized. Approximately 10% have already been converted, and we would like to make that 100% by the end of 2024. Digitizing the tapes will not only save them from deterioration, it will mean that the audio files and searchable transcriptions will be available to researchers - that includes you! We’ll also be able to use them for exhibits and in-house research without risking their safety. We’re hoping to raise $5000, which should cover the cost of digitizing the rest of the collection and purchasing backup hard drives for long term storage. Please pitch in to help us preserve the voices and stories of Lopez history!
