The Lopez Island Grange is an important island touchstone, hosting numerous community gatherings over its lifetime and in the present day, generating lifelong connections and memories for visitors and islanders alike. Built in 1903, the Grange building was originally Center School, one of four original schools on the island. In 2022, our 1903 historic building was listed on the WA Historic Registry and the National Historic Registry, recognized for its significant and unique contributions to Washington State and Lopez Island's heritage.
In 2025, donations from Give Lopez were used to rebuild our back porch and stairs. See photos of the completed project HERE.
With your help, the historic Lopez Grange/Center School will continue to be a vital gathering place for generations to come!
Help Keep Our Building Dry & Open Our Windows!
Two years ago, we installed gutters on the entire building. At that time, we temporarily installed ground-level drain pipes during the rainy months to drain excess water away from the building.
It's time to install proper downspouts and bury them permanently beneath the surface. This will require extensive excavating. We'll hire a local contractor and carry out the work in the dry season.
For many, many years, the north-facing windows have not opened due to being painted shut. This presents an airflow and health issue, especially during dances and events in the warmer months. We've consulted with DAHP (Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation) on how best to address this issue, as this project involves historic double-hung sash and cord windows. Some of the panes of glass are loose, and it's likely that once we get into this project, the windows may have to be rebuilt or replaced. We are in the initial phase of exploring our options.
