Taproot Community Kitchen, a local Lopez Island 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is a food business incubator and shared-use commercial kitchen located at the middle of our island off Dill Road. Our facility offers an exceptional opportunity for aspiring island caterers, farmers market vendors, food truck operators, and value-added food producers to bring their ideas to life.

Over the years, Taproot has supported many small businesses and farmers by providing safe, affordable access to commercial kitchen space, shared-use equipment, and storage. In just the past few years, we’ve helped businesses such as Island Grazing Table, Patito’s Sweets, El Encanto, Salty Heifer Burger Shack, Just Heavenly Fudge, David’s BBQ, Vortex, and Chicaoji either get their start or continue to grow — by selling at farmers markets, catering events, operating food trucks, and even placing products in local grocery stores.

During GiveLopez 2026, we are raising funds to support the next generation of local food makers and entrepreneurs. With your help, we can strengthen our island’s economy, foster innovation, and empower community members to turn their recipes into thriving businesses.

Taproot provides more than just kitchen space. With ample cold, frozen, and dry storage, along with expertise in food safety and business development, we offer the tools and support individuals need to succeed. Donations made during GiveLopez will directly fund:

  • Kitchen Access: Providing affordable access to a fully equipped commercial kitchen for product development, testing, and production
  • Mentorship: Offering guidance in recipe development, food safety, packaging, marketing, and distribution
  • Business Development: Supporting entrepreneurs with business planning, licensing, and training opportunities

Every food business has its own unique path. Some entrepreneurs may need help obtaining licenses or completing certified food manager training. Others may be starting from scratch and require support with permits to sell at the farmers market. Still others may need access to specialized trainings, like Better Process Controls School, to produce shelf-stable products. Many will rely on hands-on guidance and kitchen time to grow and refine their businesses.

Your support during GiveLopez helps make all of this possible.

Here’s what that impact looks like in our community:

“Taproot has been an incredible support system for my business, Just Heavenly Fudge. From helping me navigate Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) requirements to assisting with fees and access to a licensed shared-use kitchen, they made the startup process feel achievable instead of overwhelming. Their commitment to supporting small businesses on Lopez Island is truly impactful, and I’m grateful to be one of the businesses that benefited from their guidance.” - Desiree, owner of Just Heavenly Fudge

“Starting a small business isn't always as simple as it sounds; you may have plenty of ideas swirling in your head but aren't sure where to begin. Thanks to Taproot, we were able to successfully launch our small dessert business—securing county permits, accessing kitchen facilities, and even obtaining grants that made our startup process much smoother. In addition to providing a fantastic workspace, they offer the convenience of refrigerated storage for our finished products. I have worked with Laurie and Wendy, and I find them to be truly kind and always available to lend a hand whenever needed. We’re proud to be a family-run business creating desserts and cakes for special occasions, and you can find us at the Farmers Market every Saturday from May through September.” -- Belen, owner of Patito's Sweets

"Taproot has been a game-changer for our farm. It began several years ago when I was assisted in setting up our farm's accounting system with help from a Taproot business support grant. Laurie and Wendy then helped us navigate the bureaucracy of value-added food production and the modern new kitchen space will allow us to expand with these products. And finally, with the installation of a walk-in freezer (thank you to the San Juan Ag Guild, SJI Food Hub and Taproot!), the stress of having extra frozen storage for our beef, lamb, and pork has been alleviated. The easy access, organized shelving, and secure location have allowed us to have back-up product ready to go to the farmer's market, the food share, and our own on-farm "Barn Stand." Most importantly, I have enjoyed seeing farmers and gardeners, Locavores and Gleaners, and incredible bakers and makers coming and going from what is truly a shared community food production space. The best of Lopez food comradery in action!" -- Meike of Stonecrest Farm & Graziers

Together, we can create a safe, efficient, and inspiring space where local food entrepreneurs thrive—and where nourishing, locally made foods continue to enrich our community.  Please join us by making a donation today and Thank you!
