The Hamlet is a vibrant senior housing community nestled in the heart of Lopez village. It consists of independent-living cottages, as well as an adult family home with 24-hour care. Since opening its doors in 2008, it has proudly offered a warm, supportive environment that has allowed more than 100 Lopezians to live in the community they love for as long as possible.
We are currently seeking your support for two critical improvements that will directly enhance the safety, comfort, and quality of life for our residents.
First, we hope to replace the aging generator at Hamlet House with a reliable unit that will automatically activate in the event of a power outage. Our current generator must be turned on manually, which creates a serious challenge when only one caregiver is on duty and must immediately respond to residents’ needs while also trying to restore power. In an emergency, even a short delay can compromise both safety and continuity of care. An automatic generator would ensure that essential systems remain operational with little interruption, allowing caregivers to focus fully on supporting residents as needed.
We are working with North Sound Electric on this project, and their estimate is ____. Once the new generator is installed, we plan to relocate the existing Hamlet House generator to the Gathering Place so it can continue to serve the community. At present, the Gathering Place generator is extremely limited in capacity. This significantly restricts residents’ ability to prepare warm food and beverages during outages, and it does not currently have the capacity to heat the building. Repurposing the Hamlet House generator would significantly expand these capabilities, ensuring that residents have a safe, functional gathering space during an outage.
In addition, we are seeking support to replace a portion of deteriorating asphalt walkway with concrete. Last year, Thanks to the generosity of donors, as well as support from the Lopez Thrift Shop and Lopez Home and Hospice Support, we were able to complete a key section of the walkway last year, but important portions remain unfinished. As one caregiver noted, "The new walkway has greatly improved access for bringing Hamlet House residents to events at the Gathering Place. Being able to walk alongside them has made the experience feel much safer. I really hope the next section can be completed soon, since the unfinished portion of the walkway continues to make safe navigation difficult."
Many of our residents rely on walkers, wheelchairs, canes, and other mobility aids to move about the community. Safe, stable walkways are not simply a convenience, but are essential for maintaining independence, encouraging social connection, and ensuring residents can move confidently between buildings.
Together, these improvements will strengthen our emergency preparedness, enhance daily life, and help ensure that residents remain safe, supported, and comfortable.
Any funds raised beyond what is needed for these two projects will be directed toward additional safety enhancements and initiatives that support the well-being of our senior residents.
